A message from the Principal

Dear MES Families,

Thank you so much for the support with the Major Saver fundraiser for the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation! Remember the sale was extended through Sunday if you still wish to purchase!

Speaking of fundraisers: Our new school signs (interior) will be installed next week. Not only will all staff receive a new sign for their class, but our students will see S.A.I.L signs in the hallways to help support positive behavior. This initiative is supported via our fall fun run!

At this time we have been able to pass out over 500 books for students that have earned 10 doubloons! Our wonderful PTO has committed funds to support the book vending machine for the foreseeable future!

Thanks again for all of your support of our wonderful school!

Stephanie

News from the Library

“Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.”     www.history.com

Here are some of our favorite biographies honoring the achievements of African Americans that are available in the library.

Adoption of new Social Studies

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is considering the adoption of new social studies and FACS textbooks for the upcoming school year.  The textbook adoption committee is recommending the below resources.  Parents and community members may preview the resources in the administration building's main office between the hours of 8:30am-3:30pm until March 9th.  The school corporation intends to seek board approval to purchase the resources at the March 9, 2026, school board meeting.

The committee is recommending Savvas Learning’s social studies textbooks for 5th grade, 7th grade Social Studies courses, and HS courses consisting of US History, World History, Econ., and History and Geography of the World. The committee recommends BFW Publishing’s textbook for AP Psychology.  The FACS (Family and Consumer Science) department is recommending the G-W Publishers textbook for the new IDOE course Fundamentals of Human Services.

Please direct any comments, questions, or concerns to Dr. Scott Shipley at scott.shipley@mvcsc.k12.in.us or 317-485-3100.

Reminder - Drop off and Pick up Procedures

If you are bringing your child to school in the morning, please drop off your child at the front drop off area beginning at 7:10 a.m.

Please enter school grounds via the back entrance on 700N. Pull all the way around and there will be staff to direct you to pull forward. They will also be there to assist your child out of the car. Parents should not get out of the car.

AM Only - When exiting the school, you may only head North (turn right) on 600W.

Please remember that you must come in to sign a student in and out of school if it is after 7:35 am or before 2:05 pm. They could be considered tardy if this procedure is not followed.

The back gate opens at 1:30 for pick-up. Do not park on the grass or anywhere on 700N. We use a cone/number system to make sure students are safe.

Please display car rider numbers during pick up.

Remain in line until you are at the end of the car rider line. Do not pull around cars.

Pull over at the end of the line if you need to buckle in your child.

Please try to let the office know of any dismissal changes no later than 1:30pm, unless there is an emergency.

 Please follow all procedures.

Thank you.

REMINDER:  Students are considered TARDY if they are not in their classroom at 7:35 a.m.
